Our History

Pea Ridge Public Library started as most things do, with an idea. In the summer of 1974, June 1st to be exact, a faction of women from the surrounding community came together in the basement of the Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church to create a small library. Their collection was comprised of items that had generously been donated by those as far away as Tulsa, Oklahoma.

During a City Council meeting held on June 13, 1974, a request was made to house the library’s collection on the council meeting room shelves due to the library’s current space having reached capacity. The inquiry was turned down. However, Mayor Jack Musteen donated $500 to their cause, and with the city council matching that amount, the group was able to raise the starting funds to buy the old Bank of Pea Ridge building in historic downtown. Townspeople soon followed in their local leaders’ footsteps and less than one year later, the Pea Ridge Public Library held its open house on May 18, 1975.

In 2011 Mercy Health Systems donated the former Pea Ridge Mercy Clinic building to the City of Pea Ridge for use as a library. After many months of fundraising and restoration, all the hard work paid off. The library opened the doors to its new home at 801 N. Curtis Avenue on April 9, 2013. Subsequently, they celebrated their new 5,000 square foot space with an open house on June 4th, 2013.

The library continues to inhabit and expand in its current location. Within recent years it has developed to include a large meeting room for up to fifty people, a small study room for functions such as tutoring, and a collection of six patron computers paid for via a grant from the local Walmart Neighborhood Market.
